Shin

Born in Tokyo in 1940, Shin Matsunaga completed the design course at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1964. From there, he worked in the advertising division of Shiseido Co, Ltd. In 1971 he founded Shin Matsunaga Design lnc.

Though his work centres on graphic design, his creative activities also cover a range of other fields, such as drawings and monuments. His major works include the PEACE posters; packaging for Can Chu-Hi, Blendy, Scottie and UNO; the book design for Visual Constitution of Japan; corporate identity design for Issey Miyake Inc; and many, many more. The direct approach and simple yet powerful impact of his designs have won him a wide following.

His awards include the International Poster Biennale Warsaw Gold Medal and Honorary Award, the Education Minister’s Arts Encouragement Prize for Freshmen, a grand prix at the Clios and the grand prix in the5th SDA Award (Japan Sign Design Association).

He’s a member of AGI, a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, a trustee of the Japan Graphic Designers Association, an international member of the New York Art Directors Club and acts as an international judge regularly.
